DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Marble bas-relief, 75.5 x 58.4 cm.
The Symbol of the Evangelist Matthew is a marble sculpture created in 1452 by the Renaissance sculptor Urbano da Cortona.
The work was originally part of the decoration of the now-defunct Chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie in the Siena Cathedral.
For the same sculptural cycle, Urbano created other panels and reliefs, including the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
Urbano da Cortona trained and collaborated closely with Donatello.
This strong Donatellian influence is reflected in the plastic care and expressiveness of the Sienese reliefs, today exhibited and preserved in the museum's Gallery of Statues.
