DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Central panel of the Pecci polyptych,
tempera and gold on wood, 161 x 92 cm.
Provenance: Siena, Church of San Domenico (Pecci-Paganucci altar until the mid-16th century; Malavolti altar from the early 17th century (?); refectory of the Convent of San Domenico from the early 17th century until, perhaps, the late 18th century).
Displayed in the right transept of the Church of Saints Giusto and Clemente in Castelnuovo, the Madonna and Child with Angels is the central panel of a polyptych executed by Giovanni di Paolo for the altar of the Pecci family in Siena. It is the first of three altarpieces painted by the artist for the Basilica of Siena.
