ainst the backdrop of a majestic, broken ancient arch, immersed in an idyllic landscape, the adoration of the Child takes place. He rests on a marble fragment at the bottom center, symbolizing the birth of Christian civilization from the ruins of ancient civilization.
The arch itself in the background refers to this concept of continuity between the classical world and the Christian era. The ruined state of the architecture does not detract from it, however; rather, it enhances its noble monumentality, with a careful description of the individual architectural elements, which Francesco di Giorgio knew well, being himself an architect and art historian.
