From Bandini Piccolomini, we know that in 1639, Ventura Venturi presented to the deputies the pious wishes of Lucrezio Venturi, who in his will had ordered the construction of a chapel in Provenzano under the title of the Most Holy Annunciation, ordering the expenditure of 700 scudi for its construction and 100 scudi for an altarpiece. The legate therefore requested permission to erect the chapel at the altar of the Crucifix and that Rustichino's panel be sold to him if it could be adapted to the said altar.

Again from Bandini Piccolomini, we learn that the Savi family, on August 20, 1642, sold the Rustichino panel to Ventura Venturi for 200 scudi.

At the center of the painting is a tabernacle containing a small panel depicting the "Annunciation." This painting dates from after the 17th century and is the work of a pupil of Raffaello Vanni, a certain Manenti. It is a copy of Raffaello Vanni's "Annunciation," preserved in the Cathedral of San Cerbone in Massa Marittima.
