Piazza del Mercato is much older than the famous Piazza del Campo, it was the site of the city market and the Mint of the Sienese Republic.
The current shape of Piazza del Mercato is the classic rectangular one. While its two long sides open to various buildings, in the center of the open space is the market roof, a nineteenth-century reconstruction of the previous one.
It consists of a wooden and tile roof supported by large brick pillars.
