The palace was built by the Ghibelline Marescotti family in the mid-12th century, who erected the massive stone tower. The family crest is still visible in the triple lancet windows of the façade.

The palace was formerly the seat of the Council of the Republic of Siena and is divided into two floors.

In 1506, it was purchased by the Piccolomini family, who made some modifications to the palace. In 1770, it passed to the Saracini family, and the façade was extended, curving along the curve of the street. In 1806, Galgano Saracini inaugurated the museum inside the Gothic palace and opened to the public, including art enthusiasts and students of the Institute of Fine Arts.

In 1877, when the Saracini family died out, the palace was inherited by the Chigi family. The last owner of the palace was Count Guido Chigi Saracini, who commissioned a further renovation by architect Arturo Viligiardi.

In 1932, by will of the Count, the Chigiana Music Academy was established here, an international centre for the improvement of musical studies.
