This beautiful and unique fountain was likely built between the 17th and 19th centuries, perhaps on the site of an older fountain from the late 15th century.
It consists of a small rectangular basin set in a niche carved into the rock. The niche is completely lined with small fossil shells, a feature that makes this fountain unique among Sienese fountains.
The water flows into a large octagonal external basin and is still used today to irrigate the vegetable garden below. In the past, a system of pipes fed a series of small basins that served to irrigate the terraces below, bordering the Orto dei Pecci, a green wedge that extends into the city, all the way to Piazza del Campo. The spring's flow halved around 2000 when the foundations of the new university complex on Via Mattioli were dug further upstream.
The spring is located within the garden of Palazzo Caccialupi, formerly a workhouse for deaf-mute adults and now a nursing home.
