DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

While the first version of the work was left unfinished and never reached the church, the second is still preserved there.

Described by Vasari, it was admired by Baldassarre Peruzzi, who lived in the city until 1535. Dated between 1526 and 1535, it likely included five predella panels, now lost.

This second attempt by the artist on the theme clearly shows a homage to Raphael. In place of the convulsive tangle of angels and demons of the previous work, Beccafumi substituted a more orderly composition.

Saint Michael still stands in the center with his sword raised. God the Father above him now has a more evident and powerful presence, implying his command that moves the warrior angel.
