DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The Nativity of the destroyed Benedictine Monastery outside Porta Tufi is the only work signed by Francesco di Giorgio, the most Renaissance-inspired of Sienese artists, active beyond painting. He was a celebrated sculptor, architect, and engineer, and worked extensively outside Siena, particularly at the court of the Duke of Urbino. Also at the explicit request of the monks who commissioned it, the painting was entirely executed by Francesco di Giorgio, who, being often busy with various commissions, delegated much of the work to his workshop, limiting himself to realizing the basic idea and the preparatory drawing.
