Current location: Sant'Andrea a Montecchio
Original location: Sant'Andrea a Montecchio
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Jerome is a precious tempera panel painted around 1490 by the Sienese painter Andrea di Niccolò. The work is historically linked to the church of Sant'Andrea in Montecchio.
The painting originally came from the oratory of the suppressed hospital of Pian delle Fornaci.
At the end of the 19th century, the work was transferred to the nearby church of Sant'Andrea in Montecchio along with other ancient panels from the chapel of Santa Margherita in Costalpino.
The painting reflects the salient features of late 15th-century Sienese painting and depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms, symmetrically flanked by the figures of Saints John the Baptist and Jerome.
The style demonstrates Andrea di Niccolò's typical linear and chromatic sensibility, blending local tradition with Renaissance elements.
