DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Detached fresco mounted on a resin support, 179 x 106 cm.
Originally created for the Chapter House of the former Convent of San Francesco, it was part of a monumental decorative cycle executed in collaboration with his brother Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Historical studies oscillate between the traditional dating of c. 1320-1325 and more recent hypotheses that place it around 1336-1337.
The work was covered by various layers of whitewash over the centuries and was fortuitously rediscovered in the 19th century, when the premises housed a workshop.
In 1857, to preserve it from the ruin resulting from the transformation of the convent, the fresco was detached from the wall and placed in a museum.
Unfortunately, very few elements of the entire original cycle have survived. Among these, Peter's majestic Crucifixion stands out, preserved inside the Basilica of San Francesco, while other fragments are now divided between the National Gallery in London and Birmingham.
Pietro Lorenzetti stands out for the strong volume of his bodies and the dramatic intensity of his figures.
In fact, Christ, solemnly displaying the signs of the Passion, emerges with a plastic vigor strongly influenced by the innovations of Giotto and the sculpture of Giovanni Pisano.
