DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The Campriano Panel is a tempera and gold panel painting by the Sienese master Pietro Lorenzetti.

The work is no longer in Campriano, but is exhibited and housed in the Museum of Sacred Art of the Val d'Arbia in Buonconvento. A faithful copy of the painting can now be seen on the altar in the original church of Campriano.

The Madonna is one of the artist's most mature works, executed shortly before his death, likely due to the Black Death of 1348. It displays the typical plastic volume and profound emotional intensity of the faces that distinguish the Lorenzetti school.

The work is also notable for the refined use of gold leaf in the background and the delicate interaction and intimate glances between the mother and son.
