Year: Fra il 1555 e il 1570
Current location: Collezione Chigi Saracini
Original location: Palazzo Chigi
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work entitled Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and an Angel is an important oil painting on panel by the Sienese painter and sculptor Bartolomeo Neroni, known as Il Riccio, dated between 1555 and 1570.
The painting belongs to the famous Chigi-Saracini Collection and is housed in the rooms of Palazzo Chigi-Saracini in Siena.
The artist: Bartolomeo Neroni was one of the leading exponents of Mannerism in Siena. He was the best student, as well as the son-in-law and artistic heir, of the master Il Sodoma.
The panel fully reflects Riccio's mature style. It blends the typical "returning Leonardism" brought to Siena by Sodoma, visible in the nuanced softness of the faces, with the more monumental and eccentric influences inherited from Domenico Beccafumi.
The painting reinterprets a theme that was extremely common in private devotional painting in 16th-century Tuscany.
The composition depicts the affectionate domestic intimacy of the Holy Family, enhanced by the dynamic figures of Saint John the Baptist and an angel, immersed in a play of gazes and theatrical shadows.
The work is part of the core of Sienese painting masterpieces in the Galleria Chigi-Saracini, a historic palace that now also houses the prestigious Accademia Musicale Chigiana.
