Artist: Maestro di Tressa
Current location: Oratorio di S.Bernardino - Museo Diocesano
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This work is historically important as it represents one of the earliest and most significant examples of the Sienese school of painting before the advent of Duccio di Buoninsegna.
A classic Madonna and Child enthroned in a rigidly frontal position, according to the iconography of the Sedes Sapientiae.
Heavily influenced by Byzantine art, it features clear contours, large, wide-open eyes, and a marked geometric stylization of the faces and draperies.
The original panel has been reduced over the centuries and today measures 75.5 x 56.5 cm.
Originally, it featured narrative scenes from the life of Mary on the sides, of which only fragments remain visible along the margins.
