The church was built between 1471-1472 and 1477 by Giovanni Cinughi, bishop of Pienza, for his family. However, upon his death, the funds for the completion of the interior ran out.

Initially it was part of the ancient convent of Sant'Egidio, known as the "Capuchin Sisters", which extended from one side of Via Malavolti to the other, crossing it with an arch.

Later, to allow the construction of the new Piazza Umberto I, in the early 20th century, the convent was purchased by the municipality and demolished. Of the ancient monastery, only the small Renaissance church of the Madonna delle Nevi was saved thanks to Mayor Lisini, who as a historian and scholar strongly opposed the destruction of the church, considering further demolition of the small building and the works kept inside useless.

The building has a classic travertine façade, adorned with decorative elements: tympanum, pilaster strips, portal in pietra serena and coats of arms of the client in marble.
