DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The Annunciation by Alessandro Casolani and his son Ilario is a painting housed inside the Basilica of San Francesco in Siena.

The work is located on the left wall of the nave and is the last painting of the cycle on that side.

The canvas was begun by the Sienese painter Alessandro Casolani, a leading exponent of local Mannerism, and was left unfinished at his death. It was later completed by his son Ilario.

It depicts the classic Gospel episode of the announcement of the birth of Jesus to Mary. The Virgin is depicted on the left, surprised in the midst of her daily life.

The Archangel Gabriel enters the scene, offering her a white lily, a traditional symbol of purity, while pointing with his right hand to the dove of the Holy Spirit in the clouds.

On the floor there is a basket with sewing supplies, while next to Mary there is a table, an open book and an hourglass, a symbol of the passing of time and the fulfillment of prophecies.
