DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera and gold on panel, 200 x 165 cm
This large panel originally included a predella.
The painting depicts various moments in the procession of the Magi, whose journey is set in a landscape of barren hills reminiscent of the familiar Crete Senesi.
The city itself is evoked, with its characteristic walls and the two-tone color scheme of the Cathedral, in the depiction of Jerusalem, which the Magi pass through on their outward journey in the episode on the left. On the right, however, is their return journey to their distant homelands.
The foreground is occupied by the main scene of the Adoration, with the procession arriving before the Holy Family. Here, the figures crowd into space, creating a tight group, propelled from behind by majestic, agitated horses.
In the background, the use of gold is limited to a thin strip of sky. The halos and crowns are crafted like true goldsmiths, but the rich decoration of the robes, whose brightly colored fabrics are finely embroidered in gold, is particularly striking.
